Why we chose the name Blackthorn
Like the blackthorn, strength is often formed through difficult conditions. Our role is to provide the stability, protection and encouragement young people need to recognise their strengths and build their future.
Built around one idea: roots come before growth
The blackthorn is a hedgerow tree known for two things: its thorns, which protect, and its interlocking roots, which bind a whole hedgebank together. It flowers before almost anything else in spring — proof that resilience and new growth are not opposites.
Blackthorn Care was founded on that same idea. Young people moving toward independence need protection and stability first. Growth — in confidence, in skills, in independence — follows once that foundation is in place.
Every part of how we work is designed around that principle: safe accommodation, individual assessment, a personalised plan, and consistent key-working support, so that independence is built on solid ground rather than rushed.
Provide safe, stable homes and the right support to help young people build independent futures.
A future where every young person leaving care or facing homelessness has somewhere safe to grow, and the tools to thrive on their own terms.
Strength, resilience, growth and unity
Safety
Safety comes first, in every home and every decision.
Respect
Every young person is treated with dignity and listened to.
Resilience
We help young people recognise and build on their own strengths.
Progress
Support is focused on achievable, meaningful goals.
Accountability
We are clear, honest and reliable with young people and professionals.
Unity
Like blackthorn roots, we work best in connection — with families, professionals and communities.
Supported accommodation, done properly
We provide fully furnished, safe accommodation matched to each young person through an individual assessment. Every placement has a personalised support plan, regular key-working, and a clear pathway toward independence.
We are committed to choice, dignity and independence — young people are involved in decisions about their own support wherever possible.
Safeguarding
Safe recruitment, training and clear reporting sit behind every home.
Dignity & choice
Young people help shape the decisions that affect their own lives.
Independence
Every plan works towards the young person’s own tenancy, in time.
With young people, and with professionals
With young people
We listen first. Support plans are built with the young person, not just for them, and reviewed regularly as circumstances and goals change.
With professionals
Social workers, local authorities, leaving-care teams and personal advisers are kept informed, with clear reporting and collaborative reviews.
